Children’s Residential Provision
Module 1: Health and Safety – ½ day
- Legal Framework: Health and Safety at Work Act, relevant regulations and guidance.
- Risk Assessment: Identifying and managing hazards by conducting risk assessments.
- Manual Handling: Safe lifting and moving techniques and the use of equipment.
- Fire Safety: Fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and use of fire extinguishers.
- First Aid: Emergency first aid at work, including CPR and basic life support.
- Infection Control: Preventing the spread of infection, as well as hygiene practices.
- Food Hygiene: Safe food handling, storage, and preparation.
Module 2: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion- ½ day
- Equality Act 2010: Understanding the legislation and its implications.
- Protected Characteristics: Recognising and valuing diversity, challenging discrimination.
- Unconscious Bias: Identifying and Addressing Unconscious Bias.

Module 3: Professional Boundaries ½ day

Module 4: Record Keeping ½ day depending on need

Module 5: Medication Administration and Controlled Drugs – 1 full day

Module 8: Alcohol, Substance, and Drug Misuse – 1 full day
- Recognising Signs and Symptoms: Identifying signs of substance misuse in young people.
- Risk Factors: Understanding risk factors associated with substance misuse.
- Support and Intervention: Strategies for supporting young people with substance misuse issues.
- Referral Pathways: Knowing how to access specialist services.
Module 9: Self-Harm, Ligature, and Suicidal Ideation – 1 full day
- Understanding Self-Harm: Recognising different forms of self-harm and their underlying causes.
- Risk Assessment: Assessing the risk of self-harm and suicide.
- Intervention and Support: Providing support to young people who self-harm.
- Ligature Awareness: Understanding ligature risks and prevention strategies.
- Suicide Prevention: Recognising warning signs and responding to suicidal ideation.
Module 10: Positive Behaviour Support – introduction – 1 day – full course 3 days
- Understanding Behaviour: Theories of behaviour, functions of behaviour.
- Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): Principles of PBS, developing PBS plans.
- De-escalation Techniques: Strategies for de-escalating challenging situations.
- Promoting Positive Behaviour: Reinforcement, rewards, skill building.
Module 11: PPR, De-escalation, and Restraint – 2 days, can be pushed to a 5-day course
Human Rights and Legal Framework:
- Understanding the legal framework for restraint, Including human rights considerations and relevant legislation.
PPR (Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression):
- Principles of PPR, emphasising prevention and de-escalation.
- Recognising triggers and early warning signs.
- Verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Personal safety strategies.
Safe Restraint Techniques:
- Principles of safe restraint, including the use of minimal force.
- Approved restraint holds and techniques.
- Dynamic risk assessment during restraint.
- Post-restraint procedures (debriefing, documentation).
Restraint Reduction:
- Analysing incidents to identify patterns and trends.
- Developing strategies to reduce the need for restraint.
Module 12: Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) – 1 full day
- Understanding CSE: Definitions, signs, and indicators of child sexual exploitation.
- Vulnerability Factors: Identifying children and young people at risk of CSE.
- Grooming and Online Safety: Understanding grooming tactics and online exploitation risks.
- Reporting and Referral Pathways: Procedures for reporting concerns and accessing specialist support services.
- Trauma-Informed Support: Providing sensitive and appropriate support to victims of CSE.
- Preventative Strategies: Education, awareness, and safeguarding measures to prevent CSE.
Module 13: Criminal Exploitation – 1 full day
- Understanding Criminal Exploitation: Definitions, types of criminal exploitation (e.g., county lines, forced criminality, modern slavery).
- Signs and Indicators: Recognising the signs that a child or young person is being criminally exploited.
- Vulnerability Factors: Identifying children and young people at risk of criminal exploitation.
- Impact on Young People: Understanding the psychological, emotional, and physical impact of exploitation.
- Reporting and Referral Pathways: Procedures for reporting concerns and accessing
- specialist support services.
- Multi-Agency Working: The importance of collaboration with police, social services,and other agencies.
- Preventative Strategies: Education, awareness, and safeguarding measures to prevent criminal exploitation.
Module 14: Emergency First Aid at Work – 1 full day
- Primary Survey: Assessing the situation, checking for responsiveness and breathing.
- CPR: Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Choking: Managing choking emergencies.
- Bleeding: Controlling bleeding.
- Shock: Recognising and managing shock.
- Other Emergencies: Dealing with burns, fractures, and other common injuries.
